A Prayer for Discernment

Inspired by Revelation 17:1–11 and Jeremiah 29:11–13

A Scripture prayer asking God for discernment in a world of deception — to recognise His voice, remain focused on Christ, and know Him so intimately through His Word that the counterfeit becomes clear.

Read the Prayer

Father,

This morning I come to You with the promise You have given me: that when I seek You with all my heart, I will find You.

Lord, that is what I want. I want to know You.

Give me discernment in a world filled with many voices. Teach me to recognise Your voice so clearly that I will also recognise the voice and rhetoric of the enemy, no matter how subtly it is disguised.

Guard me from deception. Do not allow appearances, persuasive words, signs, fear, excitement, speculation, or human authority to draw my eyes away from Your Word.

When something looks holy but is not from You, help me recognise it. When error contains enough truth to make it convincing, give me wisdom to discern the difference. When the noise around me becomes loud, teach me to become still enough to hear You.

Father, make me intimately familiar with You.

As I open Your Word each day, reveal Yourself to me. Show me Your character. Teach me Your ways. Correct me when I am wrong. Strip away my assumptions and prejudices. Do not merely give me information about prophecy. Give me Jesus.

Keep my eyes fixed upon the Lamb.

Your Word says:

“And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.”

So today I take You at Your Word.

I will seek You.

Not casually.
Not only when I am frightened.
Not only when I need an answer.

With my whole heart.

And when other voices compete for my attention, draw me back to You. When the world becomes noisy, draw me back to You. When prophecy becomes confusing, draw me back to You. When deception becomes sophisticated, draw me back to You.

Make Your Word the measure by which I test every other voice.

And Lord, I also ask You to hold onto me. Your Word says that You are able to keep me from falling and to present me faultless before the presence of Your glory with exceeding joy.

So my confidence is not ultimately in my ability to detect every deception.

My confidence is in You.

Keep me close enough to recognise Your voice.

Keep me humble enough to be corrected.

Keep me hungry enough to search Your Word.

Keep me surrendered enough to follow wherever You lead.

And fulfil Your promise in my life, Lord:

As I seek You with all my heart, let me find You.

In Jesus’ precious name,

Amen.
